Using the tools

Most questions are answered fastest on the tool pages themselves. Each map page explains its inputs, outputs and data limitations below the map, and the FAQ covers the common cases — accuracy, units, mobile support and data sources.

Reporting map or elevation issues

If a place search returns an unexpected match or an elevation looks far off, note the coordinates shown in the result card and the page you were on. Reports that include the exact latitude and longitude can be investigated against the underlying terrain model; vague descriptions usually cannot.

Attribution and data questions

Map tiles, search results and elevation data come from open projects — OpenTopoMap, OpenStreetMap and its contributors, Nominatim, and the Mapterhorn terrain model. Questions about the underlying data are best directed to those projects; questions about how this site presents the data are welcome here.

What support cannot do

Topographic Map does not certify elevations for legal, engineering or insurance purposes, does not issue official flood-zone determinations, and does not provide surveying services. For decisions of that kind, engage a licensed professional with the appropriate local authority data.
